Statement

In 2008 my daughter Willa was born with an impossibly rare gene mutation, resulting in Costello Syndrome. When she was eighteen months she was diagnosed with the cancer that would take her life at two years old. These paintings attempt to record and represent in fragmented form the singular account of this domestic life. Through the discomfiting structure of trompe l'oeil, I aim to merge the past and present, to blur the line between memory and the tangible, however fleetingly. This work is a meditation on love and despair, the quotidian pleasures and the suffering of the most vulnerable and intimate aspects of life.
